Net Zero Pathway

As a responsible operator, we aim to take the necessary measures to reduce our environmental impact. We have set a target of reaching net zero emissions for Scope 1, 2 and 3 for the entire Group by 2050. To meet this ambition, we developed a Net Zero Pathway focusing on assessing and baselining our energy use, engaging and educating our colleagues, and investing in improvements to our estate.

  • 2024

    • What we have achieved:

    • Reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30.5% Group-wide.

    • Entered Power Purchase Agreement (‘PPA’) in the UK.

    • 66% of purchased electricity in UK and Spain comes from renewable sources.

  • 2025

    • Our short-term objectives:

    • Installing low-carbon heating and induction cooking solutions across our venues.

    • Invest in on-site renewables, e.g. solar power.

    • Install building control optimisation and energy management systems.

    • Roll out electric and hybrid vehicles across our fleet.

    • Continuous improvement and awareness programmes to drive energy efficiency and productivity.

    • Continuously monitor technology developments/innovation for new potential solutions.

    • Build partnerships across our supply chain and industry to support and incentivise decarbonisation.

  • 2035

    • Our long-term plans:

    • Implement policies and processes to drive low-carbon purchasing decisions.

    • Continuously monitor technology developments/innovation for new low-carbon solutions.

  • 2050

    • Any residual emissions will be offset using nature-based or technical solutions.

Assessing consumption

To implement an effective decarbonisation strategy, we require a comprehensive understanding of our emissions profile. At our 39 highest-energy consuming sites in the UK, we continually monitor energy usage data at source using smart-sensing devices called PRISM. These devises are capturing data from every asset that is plugged in at these venues, providing a holistic picture of energy usage at each venue. For the rest of our UK portfolio and our venues in Spain, we use energy billing to gauge consumption in each venue. We completed a Scope 3 calculation exercise for all our UK and Spanish operations in 2025, covering all relevant and material categories.

Investing in improvements

By assessing the data collected, as well as conducting net zero audits of key venues, we have been able to identify opportunities to reduce carbon emissions. We have planned and commenced a host of initiatives which will reduce emissions across our operations. We have implemented new building management systems to improve efficiency in energy consumption. Having entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (‘PPA’) for 2MW of baseload electricity (24 hours/day) in 2023, and purchased a REGO certificate, all purchased electricity in the UK and Spain is now sourced from renewable sources. We have commenced assessment of our options for self-generation of power, and an external consultant was commissioned to carry out a feasibility study assessing the viability of solar energy as an alternative power source for our UK operations.

Engaging colleagues

Behavioural change will be critical in reducing our carbon footprint and therefore, engaging and educating our colleagues on what we are trying to achieve and how to reduce energy consumption is vital. To drive our environmental initiatives across all UK venues, we have implemented a colleague engagement programme. We appointed Rank Planet Champions (‘RPCs’) at every site to support General Managers (‘GMs’) in achieving energy consumption reductions. Our Rank Planet Hub serves as a central intranet resource offering energy-saving tips, pathway progress updates, and initiative announcements. Additionally, we provide regular updates on our environmental progress through social media channels, and a quarterly newsletter highlighting different aspects of our sustainability initiatives.

Target setting

We have set two net zero targets in line with our decarbonisation ambitions. We aim to be net zero by 2050 and intend on disclosing an SBTi-aligned plan for reaching net zero by 2050, or earlier if possible. To ensure we are progressing in step with our own expectations, as well as those of our stakeholders, we have set an interim net zero target for Scope 1 and 2 emissions and selected Scope 3 emissions in the Group for 2035.

Important documentation

Please see the Basis of Reporting document for the full scope, boundary, and methodology disclosure for our Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting (‘SECR’), included in the 2024/25 Sustainability Report.

Rank engaged ERM Certification and Verification Services, Ltd (‘ERM CVS’) to provide independent limited assurance of selected greenhouse gas emissions for the 2024/25 reporting period. Please see the ERM CVS Assurance Report for detailed information on the scope, activities, and conclusions of the assurance.
